16 Oct Emotional Intelligence & Awareness
The complexity of human emotions can be overwhelming. At times we completely disconnect and loose touch with our feelings. This temporary disconnection is a natural and instinctive survival tactic. However, it is unhealthy and unsustainable to remain emotionally unavailable.
Anger has become the universal cover up for a variety of emotions. It is more socially acceptable and perceived as less vulnerable to say “I am upset” vs. “I am sad.” When you encounter yourself in a situation where you feel angry, take the time to assess where this feeling is coming from. What is the root? What other emotions are hiding behind it? Is it hurt? Disappointment? Unfulfilled expectations? Fear?
I like the idea of becoming a neutral observer of our emotions. You can increase awareness and gain clarity by stepping back and assessing the situation with an open mind. Adopt a nonjudgmental attitude. Don’t label yourself or others. Try not to fear getting to the bottom of things. Mental clarity is liberating. Before you lash out at someone, take a step back. Go do some cardio. Take a deep breath. Reflect. Strive to become ASSERTIVE, not REACTIVE. Control your energy flow. You can decide who and what you give your power to.
Key Points: Take control of your life. Live with purpose. Make conscious choices for yourself.
