Happy New Year!

This morning, I stumbled upon a conversation with the host of Hidden Brain, Shankar Vedantam, about our capacity for change and our innate resistance to it. Vedantam remarked, “Humans distinguish themselves by being extraordinarily adaptable… yet, here lies our paradox. On the one hand, we are extraordinarily capable of great change. And on the other hand, we are very reluctant to make change and often fearful about it.”

The month of December, like much of 2023, unfolded as a period of profound change and transition for many. Personally, I embarked on a move to a new city. Friends have transitioned into new roles, both in their personal and professional lives. Former collogues have navigated entirely new career paths, often driven by market shifts. We have been asked to reassess the fabric of our identities, questioning what garments still authentically express who we are today.

Reflecting on our lives, many of us can look in the review mirror and take pride in our ability to overcome change, showcasing our capacity to adapt and thrive amidst challenges. Yet, if given the choice, the majority might opt out of leaping into unknown territory. Anything beyond our locus of control can feel intimidating. A sense of comfort and peace often stems from predictability. However, what are we really in control of, outside of our attitude and response to external circumstances?

This month felt like a vortex—a whirlwind stirring our emotions and dialing up the nostalgia. Immense gratitude for what we’ve learned, survived, released, and sustained has been ever so present. Connection took center stage, leading us to revisit attachments and familiar patterns. We confronted the gravitational pull toward a “search for more” as a strategy to avoid what lies beneath. Family, home, and stability were treasured during times of upheaval. And the winds have been blowing a subtle wave of optimism, inviting us to trust that despite the changes, we have what it takes to swim across the shore and find shelter, or build our own.

A new year is upon us. Regardless of how you choose to celebrate and welcome 2024, I invite you to carve out time for reflection. Consider how you have changed, how your values and priorities may have shifted, and chart a course forward with greater alignment and intention.

Here are some questions to help cultivate a sense of purpose and meaning during times of transition:

  • What do I love doing?

  • What am I good at doing?

  • What does the world need that I could contribute to?

Wishing you a peaceful, happy, and healthy new year! May you infuse your life with curiosity, humility, and bravery.

 Cheers!
